Chefs are expected to have the knowledge and skills to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work and the work of their team within a commercial kitchen environment, such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, motels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.

Duties performed by a Chef include:

  • Planning menus and working out food and labour costs
  • Planning staff rosters and supervising other cooks and assistants
  • Ordering food, kitchen supplies and equipment
  • Demonstrating cooking procedures and techniques to staff
  • Preparing and cooking food
  • Maintaining hygiene regulations
  • Freezing and preserving foods.
