A qualification as a Coxswain provides the skills and knowledge needed to operate on small commercial boats, such as Fishing vessels, ferries, yachts and tour boats.

Duties performed by a Coxswain apprentice may include:

• Communicating with clients and passengers
• Maintaining a logbook of vessel activity
• Mooring and unmooring of the boat
• Maintain a clean and seaworthy vessel
• Receiving or transmitting radio and telephone communication
• Navigating safe passage using appropriate equipment
