A qualification as a Maritime Operator provides the knowledge and skills needed to carry out day to day tasks aboard commercial vessels. This may include maintenance and lookout duties.

Duties performed by a Maritime Operator apprentice may include:

• Maintaining equipment on deck, cargo gear, rigging, lifesaving and firefighting Equipment
• Performing lookout duties and notifying other staff of other vessels, hazardous areas or navigation marks come into view
• Steering the ship under direction
• Maintaining cleanliness throughout the ship
• Securing ship’s cargo and making sure that loose objects are secured correctly
