A qualification in Underground Coal Mining provides skills and knowledge needed to operate in underground coal mines undertaking a variety of operations involving known routines and procedures.

Duties performed by an Underground Coal Mining apprentice may include:

• Operating equipment used to sustain the underground working environment, such as air pumps, water pumps and dust extractors
• Installing lighting and cabling in underground environments
• Reinforcing walls and roofs using wooden or steel props, pillars and arches
• Operating machinery and equipment used to transport resources above ground
