A Phlebotomist is qualified in the process of collecting blood using a syringe or vacutainer methods as well as collecting other samples related to the care of a patient, including breath tests, skin scrapings and wound swabs.

Duties performed by a Phlebotomist include:

• Setting up laboratory equipment and maintaining hygiene standards
• Preparing and staining slides of various tests for microscopic examination
• Collecting blood samples, performing blood counts and carrying out tests to determine bleeding, coagulation time, blood types and other characteristics under supervision from a professional
• Communicating results of various tests to those that request them.
