A qualification in Small Mining Operations provides the skills and knowledge of mining specific tasks in the context of a smaller operating underground or open cut soft rock small mine, such as an opal mine.

Duties performed by a Small Mining Operations apprentice may include:

• Developming new areas of the mine, including shafts, break rooms, and air vents
• Making sure walls are properly supported, using rock bolts, wooden and steel props, pillars and arches
• Monitoring plant operations and insuring that safety precautions are adhered to
• Operate machinery involved in the mining process
